Remember that scene from Minority Report where precrime officer John Anderton, played by Tom Cruise, waves his hand over a glass screen and pulls out the photos and information that he wants, without even touching or clicking anything? Well, we are that much sooner to that day, courtesy of Microsoft’s Kinect system. It was originally designed for the Xbox, but it is now being “hacked” so that its motion sensing camera can take on other uses and functions.
The hack for gesture manipulation by German professor Dr. Florian Echtler is still a little rough around the edges, but it represents proof of concept as to what is possible with Microsoft Kinect’s new technology, and it will only get better with time. Plus, this was developed rather cheaply and quickly, without requiring multimillion dollar software and parts.
Soon a day in the life of a law enforcement officer just might look like Precrime Officer Anderton’s (minus the whole telling the future thing, which is probably a bit longer ways off):
And finally, the below video has nothing to do with anything, but we just had to point it out: Microsoft Kinect can also help you wield a lightsaber.
